Food Safety & Nutritional Laws
What you can sell, when you can sell it, and the nutrition limits every food and drink item must meet.
Food sales guidelines
- Foods and beverages must not be prepared on campus.
- Only up to THREE categories of food can be sold each day (example: chips, sandwiches, and juice).
- Cannot be the same foods or category of food sold in the food service program.
All information on this page is effective from midnight to 30 minutes after school.
Guidelines: food
Items cannot be:
- Over 35% calories from fat
- Over 10% from saturated fat
- Over 35% sugar — except nuts, nut butters, seeds, reduced fat cheese, dried fruit/nut/seed combos, fruit, and non-fried veggies
- Over 0.5 grams trans fat per serving (no exceptions)
- Over 230 mg sodium (no exceptions)
- Over 200 calories per item/container (no exceptions)
Additionally, each item must meet ONE of the following: be a fruit/vegetable/dairy/protein/whole grain item (or contain one as the main ingredient); contain 10% DV calcium, potassium, vitamin D, or dietary fiber; or be a combination food containing at least ¼ cup fruit or vegetable.
Guidelines: drinks
Fruit or vegetable juice:
- Must be over 50% juice
- No added sweeteners
- Less than 12 fl. oz. serving size
Milk must be cow or goat, 1% unflavored or non-fat, and contain vitamins A & D.
